What is VitalEyes™ Complete Ocular Formula? The ocular health support provided by VitalEyes™ Complete can be credited to a number of nutrients featured in the AREDS studies: Vitamin C: A powerful antioxidant, vitamin C is the most prevalent antioxidant in eye tissue, which is highly vulnerable to reactive oxygen species. Studies have shown that vitamin C may help protect the retina from oxidative damage caused by light exposure [10]. A higher intake of vitamin C has also been associated with a reduced risk of eye disease related to oxidative stress, including neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) [6,11]. Vitamin E: A potent fat-soluble antioxidant, vitamin E has been shown to reduce the biomarkers of total oxidative stress and inflammation in the body [12]. Optimal levels of alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) in the diet is also associated with a reduced risk of neovascular AMD [11]. Zinc: An essential trace mineral, zinc helps to bring vitamin A to the eyes to produce melanin, a protective pigment. Zinc deficiency is associated with impaired vision [11]. Some studies suggest that supplementation with zinc may slow the rate of progression of macular degeneration [7,8]. The current zinc levels in VitalEyes™ Complete reflect the optimal doses tested in the AREDS2 trial as most effective to support macular health [8]. Lutein and Zeaxanthin isomers: the only carotenoids found in the macula, these phytonutrients have long been associated with eye health. They are known to act as blue light filters and have antioxidant properties that may aid in macular health protection. When given to participants in the second AREDS trial, progression towards advanced AMD slowed down [8]. Our current VitalEyes™ formulation also features Lutemax® 2020 from OmniActive. Lutemax® 2020 provides lutein and both isomers of zeaxanthin (RR and RS (meso) zeaxanthin) in the same 5 to 1 ratio that can be found naturally in the diet. The extract also exhibits positive effects on vascular function in ways that may support retinal health [18]. Biologically active B-vitamins: including L-methylfolate, methylcobalamin (B-12), riboflavin 5’ phosphate, and pyridoxal 5’ phosphate. Folate and B-12 support the maintenance of normal homocysteine levels. Hyperhomocysteinemia (high homocysteine levels) is a risk factor for impaired ocular function [19]. Vitamin D-3: low serum vitamin D levels are associated with many health concerns, including ocular function.
